Welcome
to South Boats SP
Craftsmanship
and Technology from the Isle of Wight.
The
tradition of shipbuilding at Cowes stretches back as far
as the early 17th century, although, until the 20th century,
the shipyards at Cowes were more often engaged in the maintenance
and repair of merchant ships en-route for Europe. The first
documented ship built at Cowes was in 1622. Over the centuries
Cowes and the River Medina was a hive of boat building activity
with thousands of large vessels including warships, merchant,
and passenger ships being built along side many thousands
of smaller vessels such as life, patrol, supply and passenger
boats. This rich tradition of boat building and related
crafts has been carried forward into the 21st century with
modern building practices being adopted into the fast moving
pace of modern boat building. South Boats SP is now the
largest boat builder on the Isle of Wight specializing solely
in commercial building, refits and repairs, with the highest
resources of skilled trades of any other boat building company
in the UK today.
